Few people realise that chocolate was originally a drink. The first cocoa plants that were used to produce chocolate were cultivated over 1500 years ago on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Mayas, followed by the Aztecs, prepared a drink from the beans of this plant, which they called “xocolatl”.
